When people don't think highly of the series or dismiss it as kiddy fodder, I often assume it's because they've only seen Columbus' films. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone dir: Christopher Columbus If there's one thing I can't stand hearing in a discussion about the movies is the phrase "Yeah, but it wasn't like that in the book." That being said, here's my take on the films and their directors. ![]() There's some consensus on the series strenghts and weaknesses, but there's still a lot of debate so I'd like to strike up an intelligent discussion about the films as films, disregarding the books as much as possible. Even in the lesser films in the series there's always something the director brings to the table. Few film series have been this successful both critically and commercially, while at the same time keeping strict continuity and yet allowing each film to have its own distinct style. The eight Harry Potter films are quite interesting to me, not just because I'm an avid fan of the source material, but also they're a great testing ground for seeing what a director can do. ![]()
